Aims of the competition
Lichfield Arts Song Writing Competition aims to support, encourage and develop new folk song writing talent.
For purposes of the competition, Lichfield Arts defines ‘folk’ in the widest sense of the genre, encompassing both traditional and contemporary styles.
Songs shortlisted for the final will be performed at Lichfield Festival of Folk (L2F) on 15 October, where awards will be made for the overall winner, and a separate award for the winner in the Under-19 category.
- Cash prizes of £150 for Best Overall Song, and £50 for Best Song in the Under-19 category
- Recording studio facilities to record the Best Overall Song, and the Best Song in the Under-19 category
- All finalists will be invited to attend a Mentoring Workshop led by the internationally acclaimed John Tams

The shortlisted finalists for the competition will be notified by 31 July, 2017. They will then need to confirm acceptance of the competition arrangements for the song to be performed at L2F on 15 October (see Competition Rules for further details)
If a shortlisted songwriter does not personally wish to perform their song, and is unable to find representatives to do so on their behalf, Lichfield Arts will aim to find local musicians to perform their song.
A live recording will be made of the performed shortlisted songs at L2F, and this will be promoted by Lichfield Arts on their websites.
